They request immediate evacuation!"</div><div><br /></div><div>Introducing Bright Edge, a totally new dynamic for the sci-fi tactical combat game Dog Fight: Starship Edition. This expansion includes over 100 cards and two missions. Missions provide alternate objectives and play formats for winning the game. Missions can be used to supplement the normal combat game, played apart from the normal game, or played solitaire to test your ship build. (This is not a stand-alone expansion, you will need a ship and deck already.</div><div><br /></div><div>Bright Edge features NPCs (non-player characters), where some vessels have automated actions. These will enable the mission to work as a solitaire mission or make a traditional combat game more involved. The "Vampire Bat" drones can also double as Support Craft in your deck.</div><div><br /></div><div>With plenty of extra cards provided in this set players can flesh out their ship builds with plenty of new actions and modifications.</div><div>

<div>The card Spawn Point describes the purpose of spawn point tokens placed on the map. These are relevant for Missions 001 and 002 (or you can <a href="https://dogfighttcg.blogspot.com/2020/10/proving-grounds-expansion-set.html">make your own missions</a>).</div><div><br /></div>
<div>On maps 1003 and 1004 you'll see small red "hot spots" on the map. These hot spots mark the location of the spawn point tokens. Of course, you can alter mission parameters and move the spawn point tokens to different locations on the map.</div>

<div>First, to have line of sight into a Blind Zone, your vessel must be within X spaces of that zone where X is designated on the map, printed in that space to target a vessel. This is no different from a normal obstruction but there is an additional limitation. Even when you do have line of sight, you must still roll a d4. If the result is X or lower (depending on the number printed on that space), your effect can target the vessel in that space; otherwise, your effect cannot target and is nullified.</div><div><br /></div><div>If your effect traverses through more than one blind zone to target a vessel, only roll the d4 once, with the lowest numbered blind zone establishing the targeting threshold.</div>

<div>First, targeted effects are nullified in or through Null Zones, except where a vessel targets itself. You might want to equip something to your ship, for example, or apply some other enhancement. But when exiting the Null Zone, other forces interfere with your navigation. You'll have to roll a d6 and number each side of the space you occupy 1-6. The dice roll determines which direction you move when leaving a Null Zone space.</div><div><br /></div><div>Mission 002 has its own parameters and objectives but you can create your own missions. Alright kid, just sign here and you're good to go.”</p><p>Art's chocolate skin glowed with an almost copper tone in the Martian daylight. He walked outside the old United Systems warehouse district. It was nearly infamous for bringing in shiploads of scrap parts, most of which were either used by the nearby flight school for demonstration and practice, or sold to aspiring mechanics taking an interest in the new frontier. Art used to be a student at this flight school, but had recently been kicked out ... because reasons. He could either throw in the towel or try to make it as part of a freelance crew. The latter had far more appeal. And potentially more reward.</p><p>“Yeah, they say that ship nearly got itself obliterated trying to escape an ambush in an astromine debris field. No one wanted it, not even the Free Africa Union. It'll take a lot of love to get space worthy again. I guess that's why the Terran Republic snatched it up so cheap.</p><p></p><div style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MlI4qv7PrHE/YZMkQXQd3DI/AAAAAAAAHHU/qGIRJuFBxtg5zPSkuhI76vka97fkHDszwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1125/card%2Bpulsar.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="F.A.S. Oh, Sid, when can I pick it up from dry dock?”</p><p>“Oh, we already finished our inspection, so anytime you want is fine with me.”</p><p>“Then I'll head on up there today. A pleasure doing business with you.”</p><p>Art Parks and his flight school buddies finally had a vessel to call their own. Despite its outdated status and declining condition, the group was confident they could restore it to a usable state.</p><p>They were faced with many problems, such as the ship's lack of energy, firepower, or mobility for their intentions. But over time, more opportunities presented themselves leading to various developments. With a few years of tinkering, invention, and testing, she was ready.</p><p>By now, Art had finished enough of his work to get a low tier captain's license. The crew managed to make a living hauling between the Jupiter system and the Arc stations. Those supply depots are essential for survival anywhere beyond the asteroid belt, so it was a good bet for business.</p><p>Then the distress signal from Titan was received. The base orbiting Saturn's moon hadn't been heard from in a while, and there were rumors about an explosion. The Pulsar wasn't that far from Saturn. This was an opportunity for the crew to find some real action.</p><p>QR chatter picked up a Tavor class, the mainstay of the US Fleet, who had also accepted the mission. Something had gone very wrong on Titan Station, so the mission was supposedly a simple rescue. But intel was limited, and we didn't know how bad it was.</p><p>On approach to Saturn, scanners detected some unknown objects surrounding the station. This was the Pulsar's first field test to earn her stripes for the United Systems. Art seated himself in his new captain's chair.</p><p>A comms link was soon established. As she began to position towards the moon, the first platform locked onto the Tavor. The gruff voice on the horn messaged us.</p><p></p><div style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gicwHl-kBOs/YZMknmI27LI/AAAAAAAAHHc/dMdxMcQM8LMAouAgweviCcdC2pcjsdyEACLcBGAsYHQ/s1125/card%2Bassault%2Bturrets.png" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Platform: Assault Turrets" border="0" data-original-height="1125" data-original-width="825" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gicwHl-kBOs/YZMknmI27LI/AAAAAAAAHHc/dMdxMcQM8LMAouAgweviCcdC2pcjsdyEACLcBGAsYHQ/w235-h320/card%2Bassault%2Bturrets.png" title="Platform: Assault Turrets" width="235" /></a></div>“Blackwater to Pulsar: Stay put rookie, we've got this. Do not engage unless we tell you to.”<p></p><p>“I understand your doubts, captain, but if you can handle the front-most turret, we can handle two others on its flank. Over.”</p><p>“We'll take it from here, Pulsar. Stay put. Blackwater out.”</p><p>A loud crash was heard from over the comms as the turret launched an attack upon the Blackwater. A flurry of attacks immediately ensued, as the ship descended upon its prey. The turret was destroyed immediately by the Blackwater's counter attack. She began to accelerate towards the station.</p><p>A shout came from our tactics officer.</p><p>Art relayed the info to the other ship. “Pulsar to Blackwater, more turrets have been identified to starboard.”</p><p>The Blackwater showed no sign of response.</p><p>“Captain, if we don't take out those turrets, she'll be destroyed.”</p><p>Art replied with a determined glance. “Deploy the cannon.”</p><p>The cargo hold of the Pulsar slowly opened into space as a large platform was released from the vessel. It began to target the nearby turrets.</p><p>As far as weapons platforms go, the Orion cannon was second to none. Art's team had a simple wager with the crew of another ship a few years ago, spawning a friendly competition of who could squeeze the most juice out of a weapons assembly. The old components available wouldn't impress anyone, but the directed energy output would. A Vampire Bat drone raced from the Pulsar toward the other turret. The drone's target fired upon it as the Vampire Bat narrowly weaved out of the way.<p></p><p>“Ready a low yield nuke.”</p><p>“Ready, captain.”</p><p>“Hold fire. When the Orion has reached it's target, be ready to light up the sky.”</p><p>The drone began to orbit the turret as it continued firing, biding time for the Orion to settle on its own target. In a moment, two explosions flashed on their port side, as another blast registered somewhere near the pickup point.</p><p>“Captain, the Blackwater is hailing us.”</p><p>“Open comms link.”</p><p>An angry voice boomed over the comms link, and with an expression like an angered bear.</p><p>“What do you think you're doing? You were told to hold position!”</p><p>“With all due respect sir, you would be dead if not for our assistance.”</p><p>“You caused the cannons to fire on each other?”</p><p>“We deployed our own weapon. It's called the Orion Cannon.”</p><p>“I don't care what it's called, return to the extraction point. We're about ready to dock and take on passengers. Stay available in case we can't carry them all.”</p><p>“Understood.”</p><p>The link closed, and the communications screen went black. More fire streamed from somewhere near the objective point. There was no way the Blackwater could dock at the station while the rogue turrets were firing. The last thing we needed was for enemy or friendly fire to be directed toward the station. It already looked shot to hell, and those people needed a ride back to the inner system.</p><p>The Blackwater moved away from the station to draw the turret's fire. Then another one edged into scanner range, poised to double team the veteran ship.</p><p>But Art was prepared. “Weapons: fire the nuke.”</p><p>“We were given orders captain. Are you certain?”</p><p>“When the Achaian soldiers were told they could return home, Odysseus rallied them to continue fighting. Take out the remaining turret.”</p><p>Being further out, we were already positioned to flank the remaining turret. I imagine the civies on the station saw a miniature sunrise when our weapon wiped out the last enemy platform.</p><p>With the turrets destroyed, the Blackwater moved in to take the first load off the beleaguered station.</p><p>We were hailed again.</p><p>“Well done, Parks. That cannon of yours packs quite a wallop.”</p><p>'Thank you, sir. Glad we could assist.”</p><p>“Mm. You'll have to dock here shortly. None of the other ports are viable at the moment. We've taken aboard about all we can carry, then we'll get underway. You should be ready to take on the rest of the survivors.”</p><p>“We're approaching now.”</p><p>“Oh, and Parks, I've been in contact with the other ships on the way. Let them handle clean up. You've done your duty. These civilians need to be offloaded as soon as possible.”</p><p>“That's much appreciated, sir. We'll move in right behind you.”</p><p>We handled the rest of the station personnel and were able to rendezvous with other ships who arrived after the action.</p><p>Not a bad day's work for an obsolete ship and a bunch of techs. We did some good and got noticed by the US fleet in the process. Maybe in the future they'll consider us for something more interesting than supplying depots. I think we proved today we could handle the pressure.</p><p>But there is still the question of who deployed those turrets in the first place, and why? That's a lot of expense to capture an remote industrial station. And there's no one we would know among the survivors, or the dead. For now, that's not our job. The F.A.S. Pulsar is a challenge vessel. It's low stats and unenviable abilities make for an ideal test ship for the player who can handle it all. The Pulsar can be played as a basic ship on its own or it can be played as an NPC vessel. As an NPC, the Pulsar has a "Rules" card and six Maneuvers cards which determine its moves in a game.

<p>
In Mission 002, Pulsar Escort, this vessel is intended to be played as an NPC support craft. The conteder player/team attempts to bring the Pulsar from one side of the map to the other side before the opposing side with their numerous drones (with the option to play as part of the deck or as NPC vessels) destroy it.

<p>Recover 2 is a card similar to the staple <a href="http://dogfightccg.blogspot.com/2011/05/card-10123.html" target="_blank">Reroute</a>. This one, however, has a few nifty differences.</p>
<p>First, the basic effect has no energy cost. You get to move the bottom 2 cards from your discard pile to your action deck, but by definition this means you don't get to choose which cards are being moved. And instead of shuffling these 2 cards into your deck you'll simply place them on the bottom of it.</p>
<p>Also, unlike Reroute which specifically excludes ENVIRONMENT and GEAR type cards (the purple and green cards, respectively) Recover 2 grabs whatever is at the bottom of the discard pile regardless of what type of cards they may be.</p>
<p>One especially useful (but optional - the card states "you may") aspect of this card is you can move those cards straight to your hand instead of placing them on the bottom of your action deck. This can be done for the low cost of 2 energy.</p>

<p>Power Transfer: Intervene works in the style of <a href="http://dogfightccg.blogspot.com/2011/12/card-10128.html" target="_blank">Power Transfer: Engines</a>, in that the cards you can activate (flip face up) for the turn are limited only to one kind: Normal INTERVENE cards.</p>
<p>But the effects is awesome. For the additional limitation of discarding a card from hand to the discard pile you can duplicate the effect of another INTERVENE type card.</p>
<p>Notice the wording of this effect is "play that card's effect a second time", so it doesn't stack (no tripling or quadrupling of another card's effect).</p>
<p>Basic cards like <a href="http://dogfightccg.blogspot.com/2011/05/card-10121.html" target="_blank">Repair</a> or <a href="http://dogfightccg.blogspot.com/2011/05/card-10122.html" target="_blank">Extra Counters</a> suddenly become much more useful with this buff.</p>
<p>Also notice this card's effect is not mandatory, as it states "you may". But you can use it for more than one card during the turn.</p>

<p>Charged Plating is one of those cards designed to enhance an existing card. In this case it aids <a href="http://dogfightccg.blogspot.com/2013/01/card-10198-hardened-armor.html" target="_blank">Hardened Armor</a>.</p><p>Hardened Armor is usable only by <a href="https://dogfighttcg.blogspot.com/2014/03/light-and-heavy-class-ships.html">heavy ships</a> (those whose original <u>Hull</u> is 25 or higher). Hardened Armor only reduces combat damage (damage inflicted specifically by an attack) and reduces it only by 1 point. Charged Plating adds another 3 to this value, for a whopping -4 or each attack against you.</p><p>But there is a recurring cost. To keep this card in play your ship will have to pay 1 energy each Discard Phase. You don't have to keep paying it, you can allow Charged Plating to expire if you don't want to spend the energy.</p><p>If for whatever reason Hardened Armor is no longer equipped to your ship, Charged Plating expires (it goes to the discard pile).</p>

<p>Active Defensive Armor is another defensive buff reducing combat damage only.</p><p>Unlike another armor card (<a href="http://dogfightccg.blogspot.com/2012/10/card-10191-reactive-armor.html" target="_blank">Reactive Armor: Electromagnetic</a>), Active Defensive Armor doesn't "transfer" counters from the ship to this card (<a href="https://dogfighttcg.blogspot.com/2020/03/game-keywords.html">see this post for more game keywords</a>.) For this card, you'll simply add 5 armor counters to it from the general counter pool.</p><p>Also, like Reactive Armor: Electromagnetic, this card's effect is optional ("you may"). But it also stipulates you may pay one (and only 1) armor counter to reduce combat damage by 5 from any attack hitting your ship. But this armor can be used only once per ATTACK card shooting at you. If an ATTACK card allows multiple shots, you can mitigate only one of them.</p><p>Don't forget the <u>Mobility</u> cost: your ship's <u>Mobility</u> is reduced by 1 while you have this card equipped. If you reach the Discard Phase and it possesses no more armor counters, your Active Defensive Armor expires and goes to the discard pile - which also removes the -1 to Mobility debuff, effectively gaining <u>Mobility</u> when losing this card.</p>

<p>Enhanced Power Systems is another card designed to enhance a standard card - <a href="http://dogfightccg.blogspot.com/2011/03/card-10105.html" target="_blank">Power Generator</a> in this case.</p><p>This card works best in a Skeleton Complement setting (<a href="https://dogfighttcg.blogspot.com/2020/03/alternate-rule-ship-complements.html">see ship complement rules</a>).</p><p>Basically, with Enhanced Power Systems equipped, when you transfer energy to another card equipped to your ship you can transfer an extra energy. This is a fantastic buff for cards like <a href="http://dogfightccg.blogspot.com/2012/10/card-10191-reactive-armor.html" target="_blank">Reactive Armor: Electromagnetic</a>. Other cards are on the drawing board for this energy transferring mechanism.</p>

In the logistical dynamic of Dog Fight, being able to move without having to spend a tier action is a fairly simple but surprisingly advantageous tactic. "Attack Position" is a MOVE type card designed to foster this approach.<div><br /><div class="halfL" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Attack Position provides a <a href="https://dogfighttcg.blogspot.com/2013/08/what-are-layered-effects.html">layered effect</a> of a free move of one space after an ATTACK type card. Two ATTACK cards allow for movement in addition to attacking. Pursue allows a move of one space then an attack. Hit and Run allows for an attack and then a move of one space.

With Pursue played after Attack Position a ship can move 1 space, attack a target, then move 1 space in the same tier. With Hit and Run played after Attack Position a ship can attack a target then move 2 spaces in that same tier.

The fact Attack Position provides a layered effect also clarifies one detail of the intended action. The word "after" is meant to stipulate an action within the "finalize your move" rule, meaning you either use immediately after the ATTACK card resolves or you lose the extra move.<br />

Combat Air Patrol</h3>
This card is another good choice for a starting environment. The <a href="https://dogfighttcg.blogspot.com/2020/04/standard-environment.html">Standard Environment</a> includes 5 ENVIRONMENT cards but you can decide your own pre-game set up. With this card in play, players who use Support Craft can begin the game with two of them already in play. This applies only to Drones and Fighter craft.<br />

These cards add a lot of bang for your buck in any deck. The INTERVENE Gear card "Fight or Flight" is a card for a desperate situation. If your <u>Hull</u> is reduced to 3 or less you can play this card. Your <u>Hull</u> doesn't have to <i>remain</i> at 3 or less, this is only the primary condition for playing it in the first place.<div><br /></div><div>This is also the first card to introduce "entropy" counters to Dog Fight: Starship Edition. Your ship gains 1 entropy counter each Discard Phase. Other cards (in future releases) allow nasty things for vessels possessing these counters.</div><div><br /></div><div>But it might be worth it to gain a permanent +1 <u>Mobility</u> and +3 <u>Attack</u> power. Additionally, your ship gains an Agility counter which allows your ship to make one attack targeting it miss. This isn't the first card to provide an Agility counter though; you can find another in the Veteran Helmsman from the <a href="https://dogfighttcg.blogspot.com/2020/05/maneuvering-mini-set.html">Maneuvering Mini Set</a>.</div><div><br /></div>

Next, a new Jump INTERENE card is "Quick Action" which provides an extra tier for the turn. Action economy is profoundly useful in this game. Though it uses your tier action it also allows you to set a card in secondary position so you can still get another action in that tier. It's cost is fairly modest at removing from the game 2 cards in your discard pile that have different card icons, and that vessel must already possess 2 or more over heat counter. (See the <a href="https://dogfighttcg.blogspot.com/2020/07/over-heat-mini-set.html">Over Heat mini set</a> for plenty of cards devoted to the Over Heat mechanic).<div><br /></div>

<div>An oldie but goodie, the INTERVENE Star Card "Return Fire" returns to the game. This card saw some action back in the 1.0 days.<br /></div><div><br /></div><div>For a meager 2 energy counters your vessel can pull any ATTACK type card from your discard pile and play it in secondary position as long as you have a primary card in that tier already. The ATTACK card you choose for this effect is removed from the game when it is sent to the discard pile.</div><div><br /></div><div>"Return Fire" is especially useful for cards that are intended for secondary position, such as the ATTACK card "Double Shot" found in the Brutus Magnus deck of the <a href="https://dogfighttcg.blogspot.com/2013/05/core-set.html">Core Set</a>.</div><div><br /></div>

The propulsion counter lets your ship move 1 space during one of your tiers in the Action Phase.</div><div><br /></div><div>This card requires you to remove from the game a MOVE type card already in your discard pile. But there is also a small matter of timing: the next card you play during that turn must be an INTERVENE type card.</div><div><br /></div><div>There are plenty of options for this. For the Preparation Phase you could play a Jump card while still planning, play a Star card (which requires no tier action). The ATTACK Star card "Blitz" is only for Support Craft. This is the first action card exclusively for SC to be released Dog Fight: Starship Edition 2.0.<div><br /></div><div>Support Craft typically have low <u>Attack</u> power so it takes some MacGyvering to make a drone or fighter inflict 5 <u>Hull</u> damage to a target. But if you manage to succeed you'll get to nullify the target's next tier (same turn only).</div><div><br /></div><div>"Nullify" is a keyword in Dog Fight.</div><div><br /></div><div><div>Playing a card incorrectly causes it to negate itself. A nullified card effect does not happen. Effects can be nullified for three reasons.</div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>You cannot satisfy a cost or condition, in which case you must still pay its costs, or as much as you can pay them</li><li>A card that was already nullified before being played (such as by the effect of another card) does not require you to pay any costs</li><li>Another card effect</li></ul></div></div><div><br /></div>

But doubling the "current" <u>Attack</u> (also doubling any modifiers currently applied) makes this quite a wallop from the base with that already has the highest starting <u>Attack</u> power.</div><div><p>With this card the Brutus Magnus can also move 1 space before attacking if the target is <a href="https://dogfighttcg.blogspot.com/2020/03/game-keywords.html">adjacent</a>. After the attack the ship can move 1 space regardless of the distance from anything else.</p><p>This is the first Legendary card that costs no Energy Counters to play.</p>

At a cost of 10 Energy Counters, this is a great card in a Relentless deck. But the ability to disable the target for the remainder of the turn (reaching a minimum threshold of 7 <u>Hull</u> damage), this card will is a staple for this ship.</p><p>The keywords list defines "<a href="https://dogfighttcg.blogspot.com/2020/03/game-keywords.html">disabled</a>" very carefully as:</p><p></p><blockquote>Not active. Disabled vessels cannot in any way play ATTACK, MOVE, or INTERVENE cards in a tier or from hand. Nor can they execute their own special abilities (including STEALTH, CLOAK, etc.). Currently active abilities are also nullified. A disabled vessel can still play ENVIRONMENT and EQUIP cards, and Gear cards already equipped to it are unaffected.</blockquote><p></p>
<p>Don't underestimate the power of disabling another vessel.</p>

<div>"Field Promoted Officer" offers even better energy production than its previous state as "First Officer". Unlike a "morph" of similar effect in other games, the Promote effect does not revert to its initial state for this card. But some other Promote cards in future releases may do this.<br />
