Never Give Up

Dog Fight: Starship Edition puts players in the action from the beginning of the game. You and your opponents start in fairly close proximity. On a single map there is little time to set up your hand and prepare for what awaits. You could run away from enemy vessels to buy some time, but even this tactic loses its advantage. Eventually combat will ensue.

Players often make assumptions about the eventual turn out of a game. This makes sense with miniatures and other games where the board/field shows all that can happen, leading to an inevitable conclusion. With card driven games this is a bit harder to do, but sometimes it's pretty clear to everyone how the game will play out. Not so with Dog Fight.

On many occasions a player with little or no Hull remaining can win the game. Because of the tactical nature of Dog Fight and the card driven system there is no telling what the next turn may bring.

Recently a new player was introduced then immediately thrust into a 3 player skirmish after the initial tutorial game. This is not usually how we handle noobs. This particular player was battling against 2 experienced captains for his first real game. He ended up with zero Hull and was ready to quit. Being a more experienced player in other games the guy wasn't shy, but by his reasoning there was no point in continuing the punishment. One of his honorable opponents encouraged him to at least see it through. As is turned out the noob, with no Hull, ended up winning the game to every one's surprise.

In a game based primarily on skill and ability to manage resources and navigate ever-changing circumstances the end result of a battle is not so easy to predict. As one saying goes, fools rush in, which often leads to very short games. But another saying tells us to never give up and never surrender. If you know how to plan well and are willing to give it your best effort you never know what skill and luck will produce at the end of the battle.

In Dog Fight: Starship Edition you are the captain of your ship. Play the game, don't let the game play you.
